We've been having this issue, since forever, of someone opening a document to reference it for work they're doing but they're not the document owner (they didn't create it nor are they responsible for updating it), and it locks out the person updating/replacing the pdf preventing them from making changes or stamping it. Any one of our engineers could have a document we're trying to make changes to open, and we have to wait for everyone to get the message to close the document, assuming they didn't leave it open when they walk away from their computer or leave for the day.
Understanding that Blubeam projects exist (which we use for critical project documents) and Sharepoint integration has a open-read-only/check-out functionality, there doesn't seem to be a great solution for simply giving someone with a core license to open a file read-only from windows explorer.
An option in the preferences menu to always open documents read-only would solve this, only then prompting the user to save-as after they modify the document to save their changes. Most of our team aren't making changes but simply just need a copy of the original file open and expecting them to make their own copy before opening a work in progress document isn't reliable since it adds steps that most won't follow.
