Bluebeam iPad App - manual dimension lines

i primarily use this iPad app in the field for field surveys. The current app, unlike the old app, doesn't allow me to place a dimension line without a scale being set to the page. when i am in the field taking field measurements, being able to manually place a dimension line and manually enter the measurement is really required. i could use the pen tool and just draw it, however, that kind of defeats the purpose of using an iPad - i could just use pen and paper. the dimension line always makes it legible and keeps the line straight. this is a huge advantage to use using pen and paper. i also use this feature to take dimensions on photos - if i am in the field and i need to capture information in elevation, i will take a photo, put it on my sheet, and add these manual dimensions right on top of it. that's not something i can do with pen and paper and something i am really missing from the old Bluebeam app.

Good news: we’re adding the Dimension Tool in our November update for iOS and Android to support manual dimensions without requiring a page scale, including on photos added to your sheet. We’re also introducing Calibrate, which lets you set a drawing’s scale using a known distance. This release should be available about a week before Thanksgiving.

We’re continuing to ship updates with the goal of meeting and exceeding Revu for iPad’s capabilities. Customer feedback led us to prioritize other improvements first, which is why the Dimension Tool is arriving now.

Once you’ve had a chance to try it, I’d appreciate a follow-up to let us know how it works for you and what else you need in the field. Your feedback helps us keep making the app better.

Thanks for explaining the workflow so clearly. Placing a straight, legible dimension and typing in the number yourself, including over a photo for an elevation, is a different job from measuring to a scale. As far as I know, the current iPad app ties its measurement tools to a page scale, and I'm not aware of a way to place a dimension with a manually entered value, so I can't give you an exact match for what the old app did.

As a stopgap, a straight line or arrow markup with a text box beside it keeps the line straight and the number legible. It's not as quick as a dimension tool, but it works on photos too, and it's better than freehand pen. If your version lets you save markups to a tool set, that cuts down the repeated setup.

The best route for the real fix is a post in Product Ideas & Feedback, using New Idea. Mention that you do field surveys, that you need manual dimensions with no scale set, and that you annotate elevation photos. The photo case is a strong reason, because pen and paper can't do it.

I can't promise when or whether it will be added, so I'd treat the stopgap as the working method for now.
