I am a Bluebeam power user who relies heavily on macros and custom keyboard shortcuts to improve speed and precision in my workflow. I would like to suggest several enhancements to drawing and markup controls that would significantly improve efficiency for advanced users. Ive been thinking about these for a while so this post is a bit long.
First, expanding keyboard shortcut support for drawing properties would be extremely valuable. Specifically, the ability to assign shortcuts for increasing and decreasing lineweight (for pens, polylines, and other markups) would allow for faster iteration without interrupting workflow to access menus. A good reference is Photoshop’s use of bracket keys to quickly adjust brush size, which creates a very fluid experience.
Second, I would like to see a more robust scaling tool for markups. A dedicated “Scale Markup” function could allow users to:
- Scale by a percentage (e.g., 150%, 50%)
- Scale between known drawing scales (e.g., from 1/8" = 1'-0" to 1/4" = 1'-0")
This would be especially useful when reusing details across sheets with different scales, reducing the need to redraw or manually adjust elements.
Third, while the Multiply command is very useful, its usability could be improved. Direction control is currently cumbersome due to reliance on dropdown menus. It would be more efficient to:
- Separate directions into individual commands (e.g., multiply horizontal, vertical, radial)
- Or provide quick-access graphical toggles
- Additionally, allowing users to define custom angles for multiplication would make the tool far more flexible for non-orthogonal layouts
Fourth, the color picker and custom color workflow could be improved. When creating or saving custom colors, it is unclear how colors are stored and managed. In practice, adding a new custom color often overwrites an existing one, with little visibility into what will be replaced. Improvements could include:
- A clearer system for saving and organizing custom colors
- Visual indication of which color slot will be overwritten before confirming
- The ability to add new colors without unintentionally replacing existing ones
- A more structured palette or library approach for frequently used colors
Fifth, angle control and alignment tools could be enhanced. It is currently difficult to precisely match or repeat angles when drawing. Introducing on-screen guides—similar to ruler tools in iPad drawing apps or guide systems in programs like InDesign—would help users align elements more accurately. Features such as adjustable angle guides, snap-to-angle functionality, or temporary on-screen reference lines would significantly improve precision and usability.
Finally, Bluebeam would benefit from dedicated search functions across bookmarks, sessions, and other windows or panels. As projects become larger and more complex, it becomes increasingly difficult to quickly locate specific bookmarks, sessions, or items within open panels by scrolling alone. A search box that filters results in real time would make navigation much faster and more scalable, especially for users managing large drawing sets or multiple sessions.
Overall, these improvements would make Bluebeam significantly more efficient for power users who depend on speed, precision, and customization in their daily workflows. Love the program and excited to see it develop further.
