Sometimes it is nice to check markups are applied correctly by clicking through the markups list and seeing where the markup is located in the document. Currently, if your markups list is sorted by a column (subject for example) the individual markups are sorted below the Subject value in an "as created" order - as best I can determine.
While best practices would have you complete your count of "Widget 1s" on page 1 before you move on to page 2, sometimes you have to go back to page 1 and add another "Widget 1" markup. In this case, if you are clicking your way through "Widget 1" markups you would jump back and forth between page 1 and page 2.
My suggestion would be to allow users to "drag and drop" markups in the markups list to establish a "display order" at will.
