Disable auto-fill for area measurement?

When I create a polygon cutout within an area and then try to measure a sub-area within this cutout, a bucket fill function is activated, filling the entire area. Is there a way to disable this fill function so that I can manually define the edges of the area measurement?

    Have you tried setting FILL COLOR to None in your properties panel?

    Curious if you do that and then right click/set to default will your issue go away….
