I regularly have 10+ tabs open and after 4-5 are open the tab bar becomes quite useless. I would love to see some form of tab management brought in. Some thoughts as follows
- Use the File Access Panel with "Open Documents" section added
- highlight currently active document
- manual drag to reorder
- listing tabs vertically with 'x' to close
- give the option to pin documents just like recents
- If "Vertical Tabs" are added, give the option to disable the horizontal tabs across the top
- Advanced features like grouping would be nice.
- Manual - Add groups which open documents could be added to
- Automatic Non AI - auto groups based on commonality in file path, or filename. I recognize this is a lot trickier, but could be incredibly powerful.
- File path method - user sets an "anchor" folder (ie: Projects) where subfolders to that are the different project groupings?
- Filename - User Added keywords to trigger groupings? (RFI, Submittal, PO, IFC/IFT, Spec, Div)
- Automatic AI - Certainly a use where AI could be used
Additional Features that would be nice
- The ability to search inside "File Access" would be huge.
- Visual indication of files that have been modified and not saved
- Maybe color indicators?
- Preview popup on hover
- Lock/Protect a tab so it adds a second verification so it can't be closed accidentally.
- if horizontal tabs stay, don't truncate the name of the currently open tab.
