Custom markup columns not changing when changing profiles

I am looking to create a standardized profiles with custom columns for markups. I have been creating profiles to test out this function, however when switching between profiles the custom columns are not changing to match what I have saved to each profile. For example, I am still getting Profile 1 columns for Profile 2 and vice versa. This seems isolated to custom columns as the built-in columns change as selected. When creating the custom columns for each profile I have clicked the 'save to profile'. I really don't want to have to manually check and uncheck certain columns within the manage columns window every time I switch profiles. Am I missing a step here?

Columns are assigned to the PDF. Once they're assigned, it doesn't matter which profile you're in.

Is there a way to attach a certain set of columns to the profile rather than the PDF?

yes, but they will stay with the PDF if you open it in another profile.

Once you've created your Custom Columns, you just hit Save to Profile.

Doug is right, they do get assigned to a PDF and a PDF already assigned columns will override the ones in your profile. However, I was venturing down the same rabbit hole as you on working out of a unique profile from the start and having variant custom columns within each profile. What I discovered was that it confuses Bluebeam and does some weird stuff to put in in layman's term. However, I did discover a workaround.

I had success with creating a master profile with all my custom columns in it. When I managed columns in my master profile, I brought all my custom columns in and any other built-in columns I plan to use on all my profiles I want to create. Then when I create so-called child "new" profiles based on the master profile all the columns I need are populated. Instead of excluding columns from the manage columns path, just uncheck them at the markup list level and reorder them there. Make sure to save and export each profile when you have your columns the way you want them; check/unchecked and column order. I think this bypasses any funny business. I used a blank pdf to set them up to ensure existing pdf columns wouldn't override them. Going thru the manage columns feature for each profile is a recipe for disaster I think because eventually Bluebeam will prompt you to apply column settings to PDF to manage columns.
