Question

I am needing to make comments/remarks on CAD-based file with a lot of layers and small symbols and when i try to select a group of my comments it grabs these - what appear to be random - cad-based linework that came with the original PDF. They have gray grips and i cannot edit those.

I understand that I can turn the visibility of those off and lock them in the layer properties panel - but they are still selectable and when they are selected with my linework i am unable to move things.

Is there a way to make those gray-gripped objects not selectable?

You could flatten them if they are something you will never need to use. If they are survey points or AutoCAD SHX text then they really aren't ever going to be helpful.

Flattening the AutoCAD SHX "markups" as @Rebecca Yu has suggested @EADoll is the way to go.  We have this as part of our workflow when we first received a drawing set.  Makes it much easier for everyone to work with going forward - it would be great if the person creating the PDFs flattened those comments before the document was first distributed so that every downstream user didn't have to deal with them…  😎
