Tapered volume measurement

Question

Hi Folks,

I have a question, do you have a way to calculate a volume for a cut or fill, (a tapered volume measurement).

I have a way of doing this that may be a little complex.

I am interested in what others may have come up with.

As a civil site contractor we use an earthwork specific software for our bulk earthwork analysis.

When I get into details that allow us to measure either from or to a flat surface - an underground stormwater basin for example - we use the volume tool between known contours with an average depth.  This is similar to the "average end area" of measuring earthwork from cross sections.

Where I have full cross sections I have used the area tools to measure the various portions of the cross section and then used a simple Excel spreadsheet to calculate the volumes using the average end area techniques.

Yes,

There are some variations for sure and can get tricky.
