I pick Edit > PDF Content > Erase Content

Pick more then the W its gone.
It appears that some context is missing from this post.
Sometimes with the eraser tool you will need to select a wider area than the visible graphic in order to capture the data to be removed. Zooming in can help, but it can be tricky. Just the way the pdf data is managed I guess.
