AI itself is not evil.
The main problem with it is that when people who don't know what they're really doing try to use it, they get something that MIGHT be right, but probably isn't.

To use AI properly, one needs to understand the process and know how to prompt it properly

@Doug McLean +1 on that. I watched a guy try to figure out why the LAX Uber shuttle wasn't coming by furiously asking ChatGPT… it was rough.

Agreed, AI chat is embedding itself into peoples muscle memory/becoming a parasocial tool before we can widely understand the correct use cases for it. Spooky? It's helped me in my job with writing, data analysis… it's definitely been a disruptive force but is also causing a bit of an existential crisis 🤪

My issue with AI is that it is being misused by companies that are creating it or adding it to their services. I don't mean misuse as in "with evil intent", but they think it will magically solve problems for them (or their users). But you have to remember that AI isn't so much "Artificial Intelligence" as it is "Average Information". It summarises the most prolific answers regardless of accuracy.

As for how it works, or will work, in our industry depends on what you want it to do. Getting a summary of the code impact on your designs can be a huge time-saver, especially when you're on the cusp of triggering a different code issue. But it can't solve the problem of how to fix it when your design doesn't meet code requirements. It can only recommend solutions that it has seen others use, but it takes a person to "think outside the box" and find a new solution. And with codes changing all the time, new problems and new solutions will continue to pop up that AI can't deal with.

Now, when we get into the concept of AI designing buildings, whether layouts or aesthetics, it can only copy what it's already seen. This is good for quick concepts to mass produce various ideas to see what "feels right", but it isn't creating anything new. Again, this takes a person who can see past the limitations of what's already been tried before to find a new solution to "what does the client need?". If you want AI to show you what the Guggenheim would look like in a Tudor style, then great, use AI. But if you wanted to create the Guggenheim (before it existed), then AI wouldn't have helped at all.
