Change Callout Leader Thickness Without Adding a Text Box

I frequently use callouts, but sometimes I want the callout to have a leader line without enclosing the text in a box. Currently, if the line thickness is set to 0.00 pt, the text appears by itself with a 1.00 pt leader line. However, if I adjust the line thickness, a box automatically appears around the text.

Is there a way to change the leader thickness without forcing the text into a box? Any workarounds or settings I might be missing?
