Auto Save

It would be helpful to have an autosave function for PDFs being used in Revu. Currently
this does not exist and would be very beneficial.

  • I have been saying this for years. Could not agree more. It is very easy to x out of your document accidentally or x out of all documents having not saved. Many hours of lost work because BB does not provide autosave. Why is this BlueBeam????

    Hello @CGaudet & @elizabeth.adams,

Thank you so much for reaching out to us about auto-save, and we've taken note of your request. Could you share more about how an auto-save feature would be beneficial to you?

We do have a document recovery feature, that should allow you to restore file changes in the event of a crash. And if you were to close tabs accidentally, we should be displaying the dialog show below. Please let us know if there’s anything else we can do or if you have any other questions.

Having auto save function so that any works that are marked up on an existing PDF in a one drive automatically save while working on it.

I do not believe Bluebeam has this feature with One Drive. However, Bluebeam does offer this function in their 'Bluebeam Studio' tool. I would recommend checking that out, if you have not already.

Bluebeam, is an Autosave feature in development for Revu or on the roadmap at least? We have end-users that lose work for the same reasons already cited above, and they are clamoring for this feature please. Thank you.

  • Yes please on the auto save (Many hours lost). In addition, it would be helpful if the mark-ups could auto save as well to a local drive (The .bax files).

  • Hello,

Would it be possible to add an autosave function, something where you can customize how often it saves. 3min, 5min, 10min, etc.

More often than not I go to shut down my computer end of day then realize I forgot to save changes. Bluebeam does it's best to recover the files but it hasn't always been 100%

  • Attn: @MPilipchuk you're not the only one asking for autosave.

  • @Luke Shiras I agree with these, there are times where you go to shutdown your computer and Bluebeam is in the background and that wipes all save data. @Alan A. It's nice that the pop-up shows up but the autosave would cover you for the times that there is a computer shut down where you forgot to save or an automatic update as others have mentioned.

  • The main reason why we don't support autosave the way it is being requested is that saving a file needs to reset the undo list. The experience would be that upon every save, undo would get cleared, so every 5min or so undo would appear to no longer work. This would be very annoying if you make a change right before autosave, and then do Ctrl+Z expecting the change to revert, and nothing happens because a save just took place. Any thoughts on this experience? Is it worth sacrificing undo so that files save automatically on some interval?

  • @Peter Noyes

I can see that being a potential issue for some people. Instead of making autosave standard, maybe offer to have the option within the settings and have it specified that UNDOs may be deleted as the autosave cycles through.

In my opinion I would rather the autosave over the undo functionality, typically if I undo something it is almost immediately after what I just did, I don't think I have had to undo more than 2-3 times in a row.

But this is my experience, and everyone else's may vary

  • I lost hours of markups by closing a file accidentally without saving. Is there a way to access Recover without a crash? I would gladly accept a reduction in the quantity of undo's in favor of an autosave feature.

As much as I'm a fan of features that save me from myself, I have to be cautious of what I wish for. The denser side of my better judgement regularly opens existing PDFs, makes a bunch of edits, then ultimately SaveAs under another document name. I would not be happy with an overwritten original. Of course I should change my bad habit. If implemented, I would expect it to be an On/Off checkbox in Preferences.

Personally, I believe UNDO trumps AutoSave. Cringe moments due to my behavior are learning experiences. Cringe moments due to program behavior start crusades to replace it. UNDO is too important and too ingrained in every Windows computer user to mess with it.

  • This isn't a new suggestion. What will it take for you to listen to your users?

    Time and money. 😁

All joking aside, this would be a nice feature. I read somewhere here that adding autosave would limit how far the undo feature could go back (autosave would delete the history). And while we think "Word makes it work" I'm guessing that the core BB code doesn't work the same way.

In the mean time, we could always turn our documents into sessions and not worry about losing our work.

Merged some posts for better visibility and vote count. Had some duplicate requests.

  • Autosave is an absolute must.

I have never worked in a program that is so easy to close without saving. Many hours lost due to this issue. Test the closing/saving process and figure out why it doesn't work, then fix it. It usually happens when more than 1 tab is open. Great program for markups but is ultimately brought down by failing to save and the complexity of Studio, Cloud, iPad and no Mac app.

  • If there is a way to program and keep undo's and still autosave, we should try and explore that. may be the current system won't let you right now to do so, but if you can make it work that is ideal. I had Bluebeam crashed on me at times and was still able to recover most of the times. very sometimes that is not the case though. I wish this feature gets added asap.

Hi BB, long time user first post here in the community. I would like to make the request for an auto-save feature like so many others have, almost all GIS, CAD type software has this feature for reasons that I really don't think need much or any explanation…. hours or large volumes of work lost for various reasons over the years for no good reason other than no autosave feature. I know there are recovery files available, but this does not always capture the work lost. If BB wants to go to the next level this feature is a must. Take a look at the auto-save feature in QGIS, it works beautifully. I am so amazed that a relatively simple and established tool has not yet been added yet!!!! Come on, BB I know you can do it…..

Keep up the good work, thanks Mark.

  • Auto save is a must one. If you forget to save your work in that time Auto Save Helps you to become save your work.

Is it possible to downvote? I would absolutely HATE auto-save in bluebeam. I get the tendency, but that would essentially break the way profiles and custom columns work. Auto-save would make it impossible to switch profiles in a way that isn't tedious and annoying. I work a lot in profile management and tool creation for folks in the company I work for.

The ONLY way I'd want to see auto-save is if it is initiated per document so we have control over when the PDF markup columns are set in stone.

Edit 1: I'd like to add that I greatly appreciate the recovery feature and the notification when closing unsaved changes. I don't know how changes are lost unless someone has the knee-jerk response to not accept the save before closing dialogue. Auto-save only really helps when you are prone to making critical mistakes on a regular basis, IMO.
