Splitting a document and keeping bookmarks

When I split a docoment by top level bookmarks, how do I keep the bookmarks on the new documents I've created? I am able to split like I want to, but the bookmarks are missing in the newly created documents.

As far as I can tell, the only solution is to make new bookmarks using the Page Labels.
